Brand Name: Sedaben Generic name: Lormetazepam Why are Sedaben sleeping tablets prescribed ? Sedaben is indicated for use as a sedative/hypnotic. Since insomnia is often transient and intermittent, the prolonged administration of Sedaben is not recommended. Sedaben is generically known as Lormetazepam or sometimes also known as methyllorazepam. Sedaben was found to have sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant and skeletal muscle relaxant properties that enable it to induce sleep. Sedaben acts like a central nervous system depressant that slows down brain activities to give it a calm effect and allow patients to fall asleep. Sedaben is currently one of the most commonly prescribed short-term treatments to insomnia. Insomnia is the condition in which a patient is having a difficulty in attaining sleep and maintaining it due to frequent awakenings and early awakenings. Although Sedaben is helpful in treating insomnia, the fact that it is a sedative-hypnotic drug, still includes it in the list of substances that are being controlled in the market.

It is recommended that the need for continued therapy with Sedaben be determined periodically. Recommended dosages for Sedaben sleeping tablets Side Effects and Special Precautions for Sedaben sleeping tablets The adverse effects most commonly encountered with benzodiazepine usage are drowsiness and oversedation. Less commonly, the benzodiazepines may produce headache, depression of mood and affect, disorientation or confusion, lethargy and ataxia, sleep disturbance, and dermatological or gastro-intestinal symptoms. Paradoxical reactions with acute hyperexcitable states with rage have been recorded with other benzodiazepines. If these occur with Sedaben, its use should be discontinued. Caution should be exercised in the treatment of patients with acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Transient amnesia or memory impairment has been reported in association with the use of benzodiazepines. Some patients on benzodiazepines have developed blood dyscrasias, and some have had elevations in liver enzymes. As with other benzodiazepines, periodic blood counts and liver-function tests are recommended for patients on long-term therapy. In doses 50 -100 times those recommended clinically, no evidence of toxicity, teratogenicity or embryotoxicity was found in the animal species tested. There was no evidence of cytotoxic, mutagenic or carcinogenic effects. Sedaben interaction with other medicines: Sedaben produces additive central nervous system depressant effects when co-administered with other medications which themselves produce central nervous system depression eg. barbiturates or alcohol. Abuse with Sedaben sleeping tablets Benzodiazepines have a potential for abuse. Dependence with Sedaben sleeping tablets The use of benzodiazepines may lead to dependence. Withdrawal symptoms similar in character to those noted with barbiturates and alcohol have occurred following abrupt discontinuance of benzodiazepines. These symptoms can range from mild dysphoria and insomnia to a major syndrome which may include: convulsions, tremor, abdominal and muscle cramps, vomiting and sweating. These symptoms, especially the more serious ones, are more common in those patients who have received excessive doses over an extended period of time. However, withdrawal symptoms have also been reported following abrupt discontinuance of benzodiazepines taken continuously at therapeutic levels. Accordingly Sedaben should be terminated gradually to help avoid occurrence of withdrawal symptoms.
